Funny thing… I’ve bought more music lately than I have over the past year or two. Not sure why, maybe I’m just bored with my 500+ GB? Ha, doubtful. I think that I am just trying to spread the good karma and contribute towards artists I like. So here are my latest recommendations:
Los Disidentes Del Sucio Motel – Soundtrack to the Motion Picture
I discovered this french band on a comp i ordered from a small record label. I heard their song “Brotherhood” and loved the heavy groove so i looked for their music and found it on amazon.com. Their latest album was only $5.99 and that’s a steal for this record! Imagine heavy Queens of the Stone Age groove with a little bit of Americana influence and you get these French guys! They seem to be totally into that rural, southwest, trailer park America vibe which is odd since they are from France but they make it work for them! If you love ballsy rock and roll, check out this disc. They are the best gritty American rock band from France!
Artichoke – Never Mind The Bollocks, Here’s the Sex Pistols By Artichoke
I discovered these guys by listening to my “Unicorns” Station on Pandora. They basically took all the songs on the Sex Pistols classic “Bollocks” album and re-wrote them into pretty little indie-pop songs that sound along the lines of Decemberists or Belle and Sebastian. And it works. Really well. Just ask my 22 month old daughter. She loves them and hates listening to the Sex Pistols. This album is a must for anyone who grew up listening to the pistols. Or anyone that likes good indie-pop music. Pick up the album from the band themselves. Don’t worry, it’s legit, i bought mine through them.
Ektomorf – Outcast
Another Pandora discovery, I found Ektomorf while listening to my “Soulfly” station. They are from eastern Europe and are gypsies, but this aint no “Gogol Bordello” type of band at all. They play hardcore groove metal or what might be called “world metal” by some, that is in the vein of Sepultura or Soulfly, and in fact are compared to Soulfly quite a bit. While they may sound alot like aforementioned band, they bring their own culture and influence to their mix. The music is heavy, aggro and groove oriented and will make you want to punch things or run around the track a few times. It will be great to see how these guys develop their sound and become the worlds premier Gypsy Metal band!
Strata – Strata Presents the End of the World
These guys were local to me, but i never gave their second and last disc a listen till recently. I was missing out. It’s a shame when labels don’t know how to market a band, cuz this band should have been huge. This album is on par with Death Cab’s Narrow Stairs, or Dredg’s El Cielo (another underrated great). In an age of disposable music, these guys created a beautiful concept album, that was extremely original, listenable and marketable. You owe it to yourself to give this a listen. The second song alone is worth the price of the album.
Well folks, that’s it for this week. Maybe I’ll do some more next week!
